It's Almost Done

The last construction update was in December and I said "we are right in the midst." Now it's almost done and it's July 15. "Right in the midst" just doesn't seem like it was the right thing to say then.

Resolutions

Okay, first, I don't really believe in resolutions. That's why I'm making some. What? I'm crazy.

Second, THE OHIO STATE BUCKEYES WON THE THE ROSE BOWL.
Suck it.

Third, on to resolutions.
First, (Third, first? Maybe that should be a little a?) I need to take stock of anything that actually requires a resolution. Here are things I'd like to improve:
a) organization of paper around the house
b) job situation (which is a general happiness improvement)
c) the amount I see family and friends
d) health stuff

Let's tackle these in order.
a) organization. This will not really improve while under construction. Although, due to our lack of space, I have been much better about tackling the piles of mail we get more regularly. Hopefully this will translate to the "new" house and will even improve. TODAY I will did go to some no mail sites and put us in. Also, I've pulled out various privacy policies as I've received them and will OPT OUT of having my address used for solicitations. The amount of credit card offers we get alone is ridiculous.

b) job situation. There isn't much I can do except try to find something with a stress level, oh, about 75% less than what I have. Also less work hours. I have been applying to government jobs and will continue this process. I will, however, make a little more time for this in order to maximize applications. If in three months something hasn't budged (April 1), I will reevaluate my situation.

c) more time for family and friends. We failed on visiting this year, at least in part. Case in point, we promised to go see my family in Cleveland and DID NOT do it. I apologize. This is partly a function of b) and some other things. Like -- we worked on getting our loan for four months (which took way too much time), then the construction started, all while I was trying to make my hours at work. Not pretty. We just have to prioritize this and "make it work."

d) health stuff. Tackle this on another blog. Sorry.

So, some little changes (organizing) and some bigger ones (job, travel). I'll see if I can't keep us posted on the progress. I did manage to read a lot more books in 2009, which was a goal. My Kindle should increase this even more. Looking forward to more reading (if I can find the time ...)!!

Also looking forward to a "new" home and having a kitchen again. I've already decided there will be more freshly-made meals around here (instead of leftovers). Predictions on finish date? My guess is end of February. H's is more like March.

I rode the metro in this morning in order to avoid any crazy traffic due to the 16-20" of snow the area received Saturday. Next to me was a man reading a book about attracting the love you want (I am a total eavesdropper and over-the-shoulder reader, sorry). He was totally pinning me in the corner of the seat as he read - elbows flared out, leaning into my side, making me crunch all up to the point that I had to lean forward for relief. I really *almost* said to him the following:

"I'll tell you how to get the love you want. Stop elbowing me in the f*ing side while you read your G*ddamn book. Show some respect."

Did I mention the washing machine is on the fritz but we can't get it out now that they put up a brace wall approximately 1 foot infront of it? I'll snap a pic of that, too.

Finding Time to Read

How do you do it? This may not be all that interesting to any of you three people that read this, but I cannot find the time. I think I read all of ten pages this weekend - and that was because I had some waiting time while husband had his boo-boo examined (not going into detail on that, he's fine).

Anyway, I haven't read ANY of the books I posted at the beginning of the year, so I'm going to update my list - I'm adding books and then putting them in reading order. Yes, I'll finish that damn Obama book first. Holy ****!!

Then I'll finish Body by Science (which is on my iPod Touch Kindle application! Tiny but Sweet!). Then onto some further non-fiction. Fiction doesn't interest me as it once did, kids. Is that due to getting old? Husband asked me this morning - when do you cross that line from cool and young to old person? WHEN DO YOU? And does it matter? (Note: he said that wearing scarves is one sign of getting old -- and I don't mean scarves on your head to protect your g'ma perm, just regular fashion scarves. I said he wouldn't know fashion if it tugged at his hemline.)

Anyway, see list at right for updated books to read this year. I'm setting my sights on 5 instead of 10. People that say they read like a book a week baffle me. (Maybe all that NCIS and House could turn into a book a week??)

That Promised Update

We had a fine Christmas and informal memorial for Grammy over the weekend. The weather has been crazy (in a good way). Sunday it was 65 degrees here. Today it's 52.

Anyway, that is not the update - the update is that I will be starting a new job (as an Associate doing litigation) on Jan. 13. My last day at my current job is Dec. 31!

My uncle was killed in the Vietnam conflict. He was an American citizen, but he was not born here. I like to think that his moral fiber and ethical framework (and the fact that he was very young when he came here) gave him a sense of duty to this country that adopted him. I never met him, but I will never forget him.

He is honored today, along with others who have given their lives or served in the military for this country, to uphold the values that we aspire to, the simple fact that we are all created equal and that life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are inalienable rights.

Happy Veterans' Day.

Okay, good weekend. I was in Denver/Boulder/Golden/Rocky Mountain National Park/Estes Park, Colorado with two great friends and we had a wonderful time and saw tons - including tons of free beer at the Coors brewery tour - which is also FREE. It's the greatest tour ever. Pics of the trip once they are cropped, edited, etc.

All three teams won: Buckeyes, Terps (beat Clemson AT Clemson), Redskins (beat Dallas AT Dallas). Yay! I almost forgot Jacksonville, who won in the last minutes (OT?) to keep me in the Survivor challenge for at least one more week! And Fav-re -- record high! Hello back-up fantasy QB!

And now I've found something that I can savor, is healthy, and satisfies a sweet tooth - Honeycrisp Apples. I'm not a huge apple fan and usually only eat the Granny Smith. This Honeycrisp is GREAT. I thought it was all hype. It's not. They are awesome.

What a great football weekend. Maryland came up with a big win, scoring over 50 points. The Redskins beat Arizona (it was HOT in the sun, but a great time). AND Buffalo won in what must have been the last few minutes (didn't get to see the game) and kept me in the Survivor game I joined this year. Whew! (Oh, and OSU won, too. I'm just ... I can't talk about it)

Beautiful weather, great friends and some football. It was exactly what was needed after a rough week.

Football weekend

For me (not the husband) this is a football weekend. I will have to find some time to work and workout, but generally speaking, my time will be spent watching football.

Sat: MD v. Eastern Michigan. 9:30 am rendevous for tailgating. 1 PM game. (no husband)
Sun: Redskins v. Arizona. Same basic details. (with husband)

I expect I'll get home around 6 both days. That does not leave much time for anything else. Perhaps I should have said no when offered Redskins tickets - but I've only been to two NFL games, and I've never been to see my adopted team (the 'Skins).

The weather is supposed to be fabulous, so maybe I can just get some R & R, and then do a little work in the AM or later PM when I get home and recover. We'll see.

No surprises. No originality. No using two quarterbacks or trick plays. No sticking with the Freshman when he clearly was doing better for whatever reason. No defense (where did they go?). No emotion. No win.

What has happened? I love T, but he's not getting it done. He's old school, small school, Midwest. It works against Kent and Bowling Green, not against SEC, PAC-10, damn Florida schools or big-time West Coast we-hate-them-but-they-get-all-the-good-players-because-its-Cali-f'ing-fornia teams. He's had three tries. Three strikes. He's out.

And let me give a little shout out to the Terps, kicking Cal's butt, and the Redskins. At least I got to experience a little win time.

9/11/01

September 11, 2001 was our second date. I was working at the Department of Labor and had to evacuate, walk several miles, wait it out, and finally take the Metro home when it opened back up. I then had to walk about 1.5 or 2 miles home from the Metro - I lived close to the Pentagon and the streets were closed: no buses, no taxis, nothing. It was creepy.

It took me hours to get a hold of anyone, including my now husband, with whom I had gone on exactly one date. Just one date, but I wanted to call him and make sure he was okay. He was late getting it together to get to work that day and never actually made it after a friend called him to tell him to turn on the TV.

The Pentagon is near Wash-Reagan airport, and you may remember they shut down the airport for a while after 9/11. After months of hearing the planes, it was so quiet...

I often wonder if we developed a different kind of bond because we met and learned about one another during such a serious time in our Nation's history. We just had our fifth anniversary (we married on the same date as our first date, two years later), and things only seem to be getting better for us (I hope that is true for both of us).

I guess we will never know for sure, but 9/11 holds two very different feelings for me - one of loss and tragedy but also one of hope and love.

It's that time again. Off this weekend to the beautiful lakeside in Wild and Wonderful Wisconsin. Wait...wrong state.

What do I remember from last year? Geoffrey fell down the stairs. Vivien liked to cry at dinner. And that is about all the specifics I remember. Generally I remember the boat, eating, and going bowling.

We recently went to St. Michael's and upstate New York for two back-to-back fun filled weekends (that's what Bootsy is smiling about). I will get some of those pictures up in here real soon, y'all. I added them to Picasa but haven't loaded them to my web album yet.

Banks and Credit Cards - do we hate them? Yes.

I got an email today from Bank of America. Urging me to use my credit card to "purchase that new digital HD monster TV I've been wanting" or something like that. It also said I can do that with the credit card and "make my tax rebate go further."

First, I didn't qualify for a tax rebate, which the bank should really know because they have my whole entire life in their records. Second, my fantasy tax rebate doesn't actually go further if I use the credit card - I just can borrow extra money from the bank at like 19% interest. Third, they are only urging me to use the card because I never use it and generally don't use credit cards at all anymore because I don't want to pay them 19% on money that I don't have (if I am using the card, I assume I don't have it out-of-pocket), and I don't want to be in debt to them for a huge TV I don't really need.

I hate them.

People Still Say Stuff Like This

A female electrician. Hopefully for all of you reading this that is not a shocking phrase. (How about businesswoman? Alec Baldwin's character on 30 Rock said "I don't think that is a word." Hilarious...but perhaps too close to true.)

I digress. In a lawsuit by a female electrician - the only one on the team - claiming discrimination based on her gender, the plaintiff presented facts like:
*they told her the doughnuts were "just for the men"
*male supervisors ignored her radio calls
*she couldn't enter the trailer for meetings
*and when asking about her day care arrangements, a supervisor allegedly said "this is a man's working world out here, you know."

Really? People still say things like this?
Last time I looked at my Outlook Calendar it was 2008. While I realize it hasn't been a full 100 years since we, the fairer sex, got the right to vote, it has been 88 years. I realize that racism still exists and it has been even longer since slavery was abolished, so I guess I shouldn't expect miracles.

Let me just add that I know plenty of very smart women who work full time, take care of their husband and kids (yes, husbands still don't help out nearly enough at home - oh, I forgot, that is the woman's job), and do all of the other stuff that needs to get done (buying food, paying bills, etc). When we do all that, why do men still hold this grudge?

Parents and brother were in town for a little post-holiday Holiday (Festivus? Chriswanzukkah? Tsirismas!). I'll try and post a few pictures from opening presents and our walk around DC later today or this weekend.

And of course, a few words about...the game. All I can say is that the last few years it has been rough. Of course I bleed Scarlet and Gray forever...but it's tough. And Maryland isn't helping. At least they won their bowl last year (and we were there -- pictures in the archives from last year).

I am the social coordinator. The banker. The cleaner. The candlestickmaker. I keep the trains running and get us to events clean and on-time.

In order for Mr. C to have some idea when he is allowed to say "yes" to poke-her and when he should say "no" because we have a Maryland basketball game to attend (for example), I, the lovely wife that I am, got Mr. C a super awesome, highly functional but also highly techno-geeked out Palm Tungsten for Christmas. It's absolutely cool - plays MP3's, video, connects to wireless, syncs up with his computer, keeps his calendar and to do list, and pretty much can keep track of your life while finding you a restaurant address and listening to Missy sing the lovely "One Minute Man". And, not that the price of a gift really matters (uh...right?), but my gift to him cost approximately 4-5 times more than his to me (but I really do love the watch I got, and I wear it every day!).

So, what does he tell me today? "Honey, my Palm is the greatest thing ever!!" "Sweetie, I love this Palm almost as much as I love you!!" "Peanut, all the guys at work are SO jealous about my Palm!"

Any of those? No, of course not. He tells me he thinks he lost it.

Huh?

Moral: Don't buy your husband nice things.

Weekend Extravaganza

I'm in a wedding in a couple of weeks (and I still don't have a dress!), and this weekend is the bachelor and bachelorette weekends. The girls are doing a spa weekend and it will be nice! Massage and pedicure anyone? Scott is going with the groom to a little Atlantic City whirlwind. While AC isn't the greatest destination, I'm sure they'll have fun, although hopefully not too much ;)

Sonic Cheetahs were to have a show last weekend that got cancelled last minute. What a cluster -- check the blog for details (if interested).

House matters (gutters, maids, bathrooms, doors) have been front and center - taking our time and our money!! But soon the house will be kicked up one notch and look fab. It's so clean right now thanks to NavEx, my new maids. I love it!!

So, I haven't posted since January?? Does that mean we are busy or boring? Maybe some of both.

Sonic Cheetahs have lost a keyboardist, gained a keyboardist, played a few shows, and have a few shows coming up. Check out the link to the right to find out about their upcoming shows.

Scott and I took a "vacation" in March. We were off work but stayed home and did housework. My parents visited, too. The big project? The downstairs bathroom. We ended up tearing out all the drywall (with Dad's help - thanks!), and had a contractor put it back up. It's all in, and we've got Mr. Stitely painting it and the downstairs (thank you Mr. Stitely!). We also went to the beach (Bethany beach, where Scott's mom and step-dad conveniently live!) and did some shopping while watching OSU and MD in the NCAA tournament. And all while wishing Abby a happy 29th birthday (on St. Patrick's Day! woohoo! :)

What's on tap? I have been taking Greek (again), and I'm in a wedding in May.

What should you do? Watch The Mighty Boosh on YouTube. The British, they kill me!

Champs Sports Bowl

Even with a 6:30 AM flight out of DC, we made it to Orlando. Everything you'd expect from a trip with early morning flights, delays, no car, and three brothers ensued. From cabbing through the drive-through at Wendy's to falling in the street to yelling (at the game and each other). It was a great time.

The weather was great in Orlando...and the football even better. A great game by the Terps and a not so great game for Purdue led to a Terps victory!!

I was having fun ... and I thought Scott was, too, but this picture speaks differently...

I learned that I love the temporary tattoos (I wish I had some OSU tattoos). And we had a little fun with them.

And we even found a great Greek restaurant to have lunch and reminisce about Samos. A 6 AM flight back to DC (yes, we are crazy, thank you) after 2 entire hours of sleep made us a tad cranky, but we still cranked it up and rocked it out on NYE.

Thanks Terps and Carpenters for a smashing bowl trip.

January isn't far away

The Buckeyes play for the National Championship.
I’m already having bad dreams about it.

For the next few days, I morph into a Maryland fan, go to Orlando, and cheer them on. Then, after cleaning up the general post-holiday mess in my house and in my head, it’s here. The BCS National Championship. And I morph back into a rabid Buckeye fan - or really, the Buckeye fan just sneaks back out. It's never gone. Once a Buckeye, always a Buckeye.

Okay, enough drama. That’s January 8th, a Monday. I took Tuesday off – of course.

A friend of mine pointed me to this website that does face recognition (www.myheritage.com). You put in a picture of you (or anyone) and it will do a "face recognition" and tell you who you look like (or, more accurately, who has features that are similar to yours). It's free as long as you have a picture. So I tried it. Keep in mind that my picture is from halloween where I was wearing a blonde wig and dressed up like a German Bar Maid. I'm also making a bit of a weird face because I am doing something on the floor that I don't remember. That sounds pretty bad, doesn't it? Anyway, I'll try it with another photo at home and see if it comes out the same. The results:

We have been inspired to try and keep the family informed of our adventures. So here you go!

The first adventure happened this past Tuesday in Annapolis. Scott's band, the Sonic Cheetahs of Death, played in a contest. The objective is to win a spot at one of the hottest music festivals in DC, the HFStival. They went, they played, they conquered! Well, at least round one. Round two is sometime in January. Also, we'll be in Orlando for the Sports Champs Bowl to watch the Terps (that's the Maryland Terrapins for all you Buckeye fans!) play Purdue. Goooo Terps.

I'd rather be in Glendale...
